Maisie's First Birthday

Wow! It's hard to believe that it has been a year since Ann and I received the news that we were grandparents. Papa George! Yeah, I like the sound of that. Maisie celebrated her first birthday on December 3rd in Sacramento with Jen's mom and friends. Looks like they had a great time. Love at first sight!

Its only happened a few times in my life - the time I met my wife to be, Ann, now married for 31 years, - the moment my two sons came into the world and now again on Sunday, February 18th in a little apartment in Paris, France. It was love at first sight! We met our granddaughter for the first time. She's only three months old so she's not quite sure about all the attention she is getting from these two new strangers in her life. It was love at first sight! We can't take our eyes off of her and we can't hold her enough! She is so cute!

She's so busy looking around at her new world. And every so often she'll stop long enough to look back into the eyes staring back at her, wide open in amazement, and give a coo and a smile.

She may not know what all the fuss is about now but one day she will.

Well, I gotta go! Maisie needs some attention and I think I'm just the one to give it to her!

I've been tagged

I was tagged by my son who was tagged by a friend. That means I have to share five things about myself that you might not know. So here they are.

1. The first time I ever smoked was on my 13th birthday. I stopped for good around age 17 with the exception of an occasional cigar about once a year.

2. I was tricked into shooting at a decoy deer once while on a hunting trip with some friends. As if that wasn't embarassing enough, the wife of one of the guys, who was a blond, was also tricked and neither of us hit it.

3. The first sermon I ever preached was from Matthew 28:18-20 titled "The Purpose of the Church" and it only lasted about 7 minutes.

4. I was the honored guest at a goat roast while visiting a Turkana village in Lodwar Africa. I was privileged to kill the goat, sit with the men of the village and share in the eating of the entire thing, including drinking warm blood from the goat's chest cavity.

5. I fell asleep one time one time while filling the church baptistry in a church and didn't wake up until it had overflowed into the sanctuary. It was in a Seventh Day Adventist Church on a Saturday night just hours before they were to have a service.

Seeing Christmas afresh

Every Christmas we celebrate the birth of Christ - a baby! But this year I'm seeing Christmas in a fresh way now that I'm a granddad. The reality of Jesus coming as a baby, so fragile and so dependent, has hit closer to home with the birth of our granddaughter. It's hard to believe that God chose this way of entering into the world. The Creator becoming a part of creation. The Almighty becoming so reliant.

But Maisie needs others to survive and so did Jesus. Without parents to care for and nurture she won't make it. What a responsibility, what a privilege, and what a sense of awe Mary and Joseph must have had. I wonder if they were exta careful not to drop Him.

Jesus became a child so we, too, could become children - God's children. I'm dependent, too! I'm dependent on Jesus getting me home safely. Only He knows the way.
